What is the History of the Christian
Flag?:
The idea for a Christian flag originated on September 26, 1897,
during a Rally Day celebration of the Church School at Brighton
Chapel, Coney Island. Because the scheduled speaker failed to
arrive, Charles Overton, who was in charge of the school, gave
an extemporaneous speech.
Focusing on the American flag which lay over one corner of
the pulpit. Overton was inspired during the course of his speech
to present an idea for a Christian flag, which would remind
people of all nations of their allegiance to God. The flag he
described would be white, representing purity, innocence and
peace. A blue panel in the corner would symbolize faith, trust
and sincerity. The symbol of the cross would be red, reminding
us of our Saviour's sacrifice. [see below for a pictoral representation
of our Christian Flag]
A short time later, Overton had a flag made according
to his description, and on Octover 5, 1897, the Christian flag
was placed beside the American flag for the first time.
